The 10th to 16th
February is Go Green Week and cookware
brand, ProCook have got some top tips to help you get the best from your
cookware.
We are always being told what we should
eat, how we should eat it and how it should be cooked, to be the healthiest it
can be.
But how can you be sure you are getting the
best out of your cookware to help you maximise green efficiency?
1.
Choose cookware, utensils and
knives that will last a lifetime and don’t have to be thrown away with stuck on
casserole. Go for cast iron or
stainless steel. Although it is an
investment at the start, it will last for generations.
2.
Gas v Electric –Gas is a fossil
fuel, but it can be argued that electricity is generated from coal burning
power plants. So which is better? The answer is Electric. With electricity,
the most efficient stoves are those that use induction elements, which transfer
electromagnetic energy directly to the pan, leaving the cook-top itself
relatively cool and using less than half the energy of standard coil elements.
3.
Make the best use of the oven as possible. Many ovens, these days, heat up rapidly so
you don’t need to leave them running as long.
This means you can put food in right away, then turn the oven off five
or ten minutes early and let dishes finish cooking in the
residual heat. It also pays to cook more
than one thing in the oven at the same time.
4.
Make it yourself.
There is no point in buying frozen food and wasting the energy it takes
to freeze and then reheat it. It is much
better to buy and cook fresh, and then you will know exactly what is in it.
5.
Buy and cook in bulk. Buying in bulk means less packaging and less
cooking time as well as financial savings.
Just make sure you can eat/store it all.
There are lots more ways you can achieve a
greener kitchen, please feel free to make more suggestions via twitter @ProCookUK.
